Boba: Una aventura de la leche

2D Platform Game inspired by "Jump King"

About

2D platform game inspired by "Jump King". Control Boba the milk bubble and cross several vertical screens, climbing sweets of all kinds, such as licorice or sticky honeycombs.

This game presents a challenge to players thanks to the original jumping mechanic, which is difficult to master, while also being tremendously fun.

My contribution

  • Gameplay Design: In this edition of the Global Game Jam, the chosen theme was "Bubbles". Once we decided that the game would be a 2D Platformer, we had to decide what mechanics the game would have as well as its style: Would it be similar to "Super Mario"? More similar to "Celeste"? Since I was the only Game Designer in the team, it was my responsability to make these decisions and find answers that would convince my colleagues. After some time thinking about options, I decided to take "Jump King" as a reference. Thus, the player should traverse the screens from bottom to top, mastering a complicated but addictive jumping mechanic. The idea was that, as in the reference game, the game presents a challenge to the players, thus encouraging them to continue playing until they complete a new screen. To do this, I designed a jumping mechanic in which the player had to control the direction and power of Boba's jump by pressing the space bar: upon releasing the bar, Boba the bubble will blow through a straw that is continuously rotating around her, thus propelling herself in the opposite direction. Plus, the longer you hold down the space bar, the harder Boba will blow. My colleagues loved the idea, and it also fit with the theme of the Jam, so we began to design the other mechanics based on this type of jump. I can proudly say that this Gameplay Design won the award for "Best Gameplay", in addition to the "Crowd favorite" award that the game received.

  • Game Design: As Game Designer, I was in charge of parameterizing various elements of the game, such as the power of Boba's jump or the speed at which she spins.

  • Level Design: I was in charge of designing and assembling all the game screens: the layout of the platforms, the difficulty curve, etc. At first set up a Whiteboxing, which I adjusted as I verified that the different obstacles I posed were fair and fun to overcome. Once I finished with the Whiteboxing thanks to the feedback from my colleagues and other Jam participants, I was in charge of dressing the screens, replacing the placeholders with the Sprites that the artists had made.
